North Broward baseball wins district semifinal

North Broward advanced to the District 14-4A championship game with a dramatic 7-6 victory over Pine Crest on Wednesday night at Nova Southeastern University.

North Broward (16-9) jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning with a two-run homerun by starting pitcher Alex Ernestine and a two-run single by Max Tannenbaum.

Ernestine doubled his next time up in the second inning and scored on a wild pitch to give the Eagles a 5-1 advantage heading into the third.

With his father, two-time World Series champion Jeff Conine, in the crowd, Griffin Conine hit a monster homerun over the right field fence to tie the score at 6-6.

North Broward quickly regained the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning when Mack Nathanson scored off a wild pitch by Jordan Schulefand.

Tannenbaum. closed it out for the Eagles and earned the win with a 1-2-3 inning punctuated by an infield fly by Saks.

Basketball

Northeast guard Richard Lee III has made an oral commitment to University of Tennessee-Martin.

The addition of Lee gives the Skyhawks a player who can make shots from anywhere on the court. His ability to bust zones was pivotal in Blanche Ely winning the Class 7A state title in 2012-13.

“They recruited for my scoring and making plays for my teammates,” Lee said. “They need someone to open up things and spread the floor and be an offensive threat. Out of all the schools, Tennessee-Martin treated me like they wanted me the most. I got the best opportunity to play right away as a freshman.”

Lee also considered North Carolina-Wilmington, New Orleans and Stetson.

Lee led Blanche Ely in scoring (14.4 ppg) as a junior, before transferring back to Northeast, where he played his freshman and sophomore seasons.

Lee averaged a career-high 19 points for Northeast as a senior.
