In her April 21 letter, Carol Cox called reporters and the mainstream media “elitist and self-promoting snobs.” In what universe does she live? Reporters and the media are often the only barrier that stands between the powerful and the powerless.
Reporters in search of the unbiased truth endure hardship and obstructionism and even imprisonment and death as a daily risk all over the world. There is no shortage of courage among them in their quest for the facts behind the story. If someone doesn’t like those facts, or they don’t fit with a personal advocacy, media bias is hauled out on a banner, often renamed as “media liberalism.” But, “snobs?”
Perhaps Ms. Cox would like to live in Cuba or China, where reporters with the facts won’t bother her because they are in prison or under house arrest.
