Re the April 16 article Aventura to use safety grant to educate pedestrians, cyclists, mentioned bicyclists having to ride on the right-hand side of the road. Assuming that this is the law, then the legislators got it absolutely wrong.
Bicyclists know how crazy traffic is, and being asked to ride only on the right-hand side or without seeing vehicles coming from behind is illogical. Bicyclists who ride only on the right-hand side put their lives in someone else’s hands because they never have a chance to make a defensive maneuver.
Many drivers are rude. Add careless behavior like texting, applying makeup and racing, then why should bicyclists put their lives at risk by obeying an improvident law?
Bicyclists are justified in breaking the law as needed. I hope that Critical Mass can bend a few legislators’ ears, because laws have to be reviewed, amended and, possibly, repealed.
