Driver checking damage to his car on I-595 killed by another vehicle

A driver checking damage to his car on Interstate 595 Tuesday morning died after he was struck by another vehicle.

The accident happened about 5 a.m. on westbound I-595’s ramp to Florida’s Turnpike. Gregory Gardner, 45, was behind the wheel of a BMW sedan when he hit a barrier and lost control of his car, according to Florida Highway Patrol Sgt. Mark Wysocky.

He spun and came to rest blocking both lanes of the ramp. Gardner got out to see how badly his car was banged up. He was standing by the car when he was struck by Michel Rondon, 33, of Fort Lauderdale.

Gardner was taken to Broward Health Medical Center, where he died.
