Re Nick Hados’ letter, Help foster children, I was a Guardian ad Litem for four years. For personal reasons, I retired from the program a few years ago. After reading the Miami Herald’s series Innocents lost and realizing how many children died because of a shortage of child advocates, I felt a strong need to return to the program. I just completed re-training (in Broward) and expect to get a case within the next few days.
One thing Hado didn’t mention is that you do not need any special experience or education to volunteer for GAL. After passing a background check, you will get all the training and follow-up assistance you need from a team of dedicated professionals.
It only takes about 10 hours a month. So, please, give this more than a passing thought. Innocent children need you to watch over them.
