While I commend Tom Swick for bringing the issue of safe driving to the fore, he has misplaced the blame for what he identifies as discourteous driving in South Florida (Try this: Connect – in a good way – with fellow drivers on I-95, Readers’ Forum, April 14).
In most other states — and in Europe — the left lane is used for passing and for faster-moving vehicles. This results in a steady and uniform stream of traffic. When such a law was to be passed in Florida during Gov. Jeb Bush’s administration, he vetoed it, which was foolish and shortsighted.
When a slow driver is blocking the left lane, causing other drivers to fend for themselves criss-crossing the road, I remember Bush, but without any nice or calming thoughts.
