Recap: San Jose vs. Columbus

The Sports Network

Santa Clara, CA ( - Federico Higuain and Chris Wondolowski traded goals on Sunday as the Columbus Crew and San Jose Earthquakes played to a 1-1 stalemate at Buck Shaw Stadium.

After suffering their first defeat of the young season last week, a 2-0 loss to Toronto FC, Columbus had the better of the play for most of the first 45 minutes and found the first goal of the match one minute before the intermission.

Waylon Francis set the scoring play in motion as he broke free down the left flank and cut the ball back inside the box to a wide-open Higuain, who side- footed home the finish for his fourth goal of the campaign.

But San Jose battled back and drew level in the 51st minute with a well- executed set piece when Shea Salinas whipped a corner kick into the box and Wondolowski was left unmarked to nod it home with ease.

Both sides had ample opportunities to find a winner over the final 25-plus minutes, but were wasteful with their chances and had to settle for a point apiece.

The result sees Columbus improve to 10 points from five matches, while San Jose remains winless from their first four games this season.
