Q: I’m planning a major kitchen remodeling job. The first thing I want to do is purchase all my plumbing fixtures, like the faucet, disposer and sink.
My issue is choosing the correct kitchen sink. Because of budget concerns I’m not sure if I will go with a top-mount or under-mount sink. Do then make a kitchen sink that can be installed both top-mount or under-mount? This way I can get my sink now and install it either way later.
A: Kitchen sinks for the most part used to be “drop-in” style sinks. Meaning that the sink was lowered into a pre-cut opening in the counter top. A drop-in sink is also referred to as a top-mount style.
Then, a little over a decade ago under-mount sinks became popular. This style sink is mounted “under” the counter top to create a very clean look. However, under-mount sinks usually cost more to install than drop-in sinks, and that’s why both are popular.
In most cases you have to choose one or the other since they are two very different styles. But, today you can find some stainless steel sinks called “dual-mount” kitchen sinks.
Dual-mount sinks can be installed over or under the counter top. The secret is a thin and completely flat sink rim that adapts to either installation. Bottom line: No matter the install, with a “dual-mount” kitchen sink, you won’t be sunk.
