Ransom boys, girls win regional matches

The Ransom Everglades boys’ and girls’ tennis teams are set to make another run at the Class 1A state championships next week.

The Raiders dominated their Class 1A regional final matches Thursday afternoon to clinch berths at state. Ransom’s boys defeated Miami Country Day 4-1 at the Jockey Club, and the girls swept Carrollton 5-0 at Crandon Park.

Ransom Everglades’ boys were led by Antonio Mora, Samuel Rubell, Grant Dill and Spencer Goldsmith, who swept the No. 2 through 5 singles divisions. Miami Country Day’s Shaun Berman won the No. 1 singles match and had already qualified for state in the individual bracket. The Ransom boys are hoping to win their first state title since 2008.

The Raiders’ girls were led by Allegra Hanlon, Claudia Mackenzie and Lindsey Mendelson, whom each won their matches 6-0, 6-0.

BASKETBALL

Miami Christian announced Thursday it has hired former Hialeah Gardens coach Marcos Molina as its new boys’ basketball coach.

Molina led Hialeah Gardens to a state championship in 2012 and a regional final appearance the following season. Molina spent last season as an assistant coach at Barry University.
