Pedestrian struck by car, killed in hit-and-run

A pedestrian was struck and killed Thursday morning in a hit-and-run at Le Jeune Road and Southwest Eighth Street in Miami.

Nancy Gomez, 49, was crossing the street when Robert Vivas, 26, driving a 2002 gold Hyundai, fatally hit her.

Vivas continued driving west when a witness followed him and forced him to stop several blocks away, police said. The witness persuaded Vivas to drive back to the scene of the crash.

"These individuals were able to convince this person to come back to the scene,” Miami police Sgt. Luis Taborda said at the crash site.

Vivas was charged with one count of leaving the scene of a crash involving a death.

Eighth Street was shut down between Southwest 42nd and 44th avenues in both directions for about four hours after the 2:30 a.m. tragedy.
