Majority of New Jersey folks see Christie report as 'whitewash'

McClatchy Washington Bureau

A lot of folks in New Jersey aren't buying the report clearing state Gov. Chris Christie.

A new Quinnipiac University poll, released Wednesday, found that of the 96 percent who know something about the George Washington bridge controversy, 56 percent said the probe commissioned by the governor was a whitewash.

Thirty-six percent called the investigation, which cleared Christie of involvement in the bridge closing last year, was a legitimate probe.

Christie's political stock continues to plummet. his job approval dropped to 49-44 percent, and voters are split on whether he's more of a leader than a bully.

"A 'whitewash,' voters say of the investigation of himself that New Jersey Gov. Christopher Christie commissioned. There's a clear political split: two thirds of Republicans agree with the report while Democrats overwhelmingly give it bad marks," said Maurice Carroll, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Poll.
