Sophomore Claire Blount pitched a complete-game shutout and went 2-for-3 at the plate with a run scored to lead the Pembroke Pines Charter softball team to victory over upstart Miramar 2-0 in the BCAA Big 8 quarterfinal Tuesday night at Silver Lakes Park – South.

The Jaguars (15-5-1) advance to face Cooper City, whom they lost to in the regular season, at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Miramar will face Fort Lauderdale at 4 p.m.

Blount (11-5) kept the ball down and was effective in jamming hitters inside with her dropball to finish with eight strikeouts and nine ground ball outs. She gave up five hits over her seven shutout innings.

She had runners on first and third with two outs in the bottom of the seventh when she calmly induced Patriots No. 9 hitter Deajah McKay into a ground out to short to end the game.

“I was hoping to get her out because I knew they had a good top four,” said Blount, who struck McKay out her previous two times up. “I was pretty confident [to get that out].”

Blount also struck out cleanup hitter Aubrenee Barlow twice on her 0-for-3 night, but No. 3 hitter and shortstop Reanne Drayton went 3-for-3 with a double.

Just a sophomore, Blount has emerged as a leader on a Pines Charter team that has reached the state championship the past two seasons, winning it all in 2012.

“She’s come in and she’s taken a leadership role on the field, and that’s hard to do as a 10th grader,” Pines Charter coach Tom Fadul said.

A complete player, Blount scored the first Jaguars run. Leading off in the first, she walked, stole second and eventually scored on a squeeze play. She reached on singles her next two times up.

“It’s not an excuse just because you’re a pitcher not to be able to hit,” Blount said. “I take really big pride in my hitting.”

Pines Charter scored its second run in the sixth when Bridget Blount scored Courtney Dart from third on a ground ball to second.

Fadul appreciates the opportunity to play in the first BCAA Big 8 in softball.

“This time of the year you want to be playing good teams, so we’re doing what we want to do,” Fadul said. “What we plan to accomplish is get prepared for our district playoffs next week.”

Miramar pitcher Valerie Lamb gave up two earned runs on seven hits and three walks over her seven innings.
