Re the March 30 article, Group says power companies wield too much influence in Legislature:
The whole lobbyist influence peddling issue aside, the biggest problem with the status quo is highlighted in a single sentence in the article: “Florida law gives electric companies a monopoly in return for a guaranteed rate of return on investment and regulation.”
This is, quite frankly, totally anti-capitalist. The whole idea of a market economy is that it fosters competition which in turn gives consumers the best product at the lowest price.
By allowing any company to have a monopoly, Florida is preventing this from happening.
This is actually worse than the Chinese model of state sanctioned monopolies in industry.
The Chinese government dismantled the state electricity monopoly over a decade ago and is actively promoting market competition.
Isn't this what we fought with the Soviets in the Cold War over? Didn't we win?
Then how is it that we seem to be doing a worse job of being capitalists than China which is ostensibly still communist?
