According to Fabiola Santiago's April 2 article, Don't kill Ultra over excesses, we should overlook the “disgusting and pathetic” actions that she describes and continue to host the event. Why? Because, Santiago writes, every generation survives its excesses, temporary jobs are created and financial success is evident.
Santiago may excuse Ultra's failures, but I don't. She omits discussing traffic jams, drunk, drugged and sometimes intimidating pedestrians, incessant noise and a mess of garbage left behind. As a nearby resident, I dread the arrival of that annual weekend.
What a contrast when we look at the accomplishments in our downtown: Miami Arena, Perez Art Museum, the Arsht Center, an elevated transportation system and more to come. Construction is booming, drawing international praise and positive publicity. Ultra does not fit this pattern. There is absolutely nothing to be proud of by hosting it.
Santiago suggests moving it. I suggest somewhere very far from Miami.
