The headline of Joe Cardona’s March 29 Other Views column, Ignoring the will of the people, says it all.
Despite the people’s overwhelming vote in favor of the Pets’ Trust plan to decrease animal overpopulation and better the miserable lot of the county’s strays, Mayor Carlos Gimenez and eight county commissioners decided to simply ignore that vote.
The mayor claimed it was to hold down taxes, but since 66 percent of voters explicitly agreed to increase their taxes slightly in favor of compassion, you have to wonder whose taxes he was concerned about. Could it be some donors and friends count more than two out of three Miami-Dade residents?
I understand at least one commissioner, Xavier Suarez, now favors implementing a similar plan.
Bravo. Let’s hope others join him.
