Impressive Carol City captures 5 of 6 relays at Miramar meet

Carol City and Chaminade rolled out impressive 400-meter relay victories at the Miramar Relays on Saturday.

Kessiah Lozin, fellow holdover Kendia Williams along with new legs Remy Addison and Jada Johnson brought the Carol City girls’ team home in 49.17, ahead of American Heritage (53.93).

“We have been struggling this year in baton exchanges, so we came out [Saturday] with a goal to get first place,” Lozin said.

Lozin also led the Chiefs to victory in the 800-meter relay and 1,600 relay as the Chiefs looked impressive in taking five of six relay races at the Ansin Sports Complex.

Meanwhile, Chaminade unveiled its 400-meter relay boys’ team of Lemuel Jones, Javhari Bourdeau, Najee Boyer and Nikkoli Jaghai for the first time this season, and the Lions clocked 43.65 to beat McArthur and Coconut Creek. That same quartet returned to win the 800 relay in 1:30.51.

Although the Lions’ boys relay team is working against time to get ready for its postseason run, Lions’ triple jump star Gino Brown looked state ready in winning the event with a personal-best 46-10.50 (No. 7 in Florida).

Williams jump-started the girls’ big day for the Chiefs by winning the long jump, before returning to win the 100 (12.15) and lead the Chiefs’ 1,600-sprint medley to victory in 4:51.88.

As spectacular the Chiefs girls looked in the relays, it was American Heritage’s superior depth that lifted it to the girls’ team title, 130-119 over Carol City.

To offset what could have been a crippling exodus of most of its biggest stars last Summer, American Heritage has reloaded with a bevy of young talent led by seventh grader Gina Heintskill, who went 1-3 in the 400 and 200.

Budding freshman distance star Gabrielle Lawson won the 3,200 in 14:57.95, sophomore Morgan Mullings finished third in the 100 hurdles and 300 hurdles and freshman Sophia Gustely won the discus (133-2.50) and finished second in the shot put (29-0).

Miramar’s Florida-bound long sprint star Jabari Hill, looking in the best shape of his career, won the high jump (6-2) and then cruised to victory in the 400 meters by clocking 47.75, three steps ahead of teammate Gregori McCrae (50.64).

Courtney Holt and Daija Rivera led the charge for the Miramar girls’ team, winning the 100 hurdles and 300 hurdles, respectively.

Behind victories from Carlos Penaranda in the 1,600 and Andrew Iglesias in the 3,200 Pines Charter owned the boys’ distances.
