Not everyone was surprised by the news that Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin are splitting after 10 years. Several sources told People.com that the Oscar-winning actress, 41, and the Coldplay frontman, 37, had been struggling for some time to keep their marriage afloat.
Parents to Apple, 9 ½, and Moses, 7 ½, the couple “really tried to make the marriage work, but sometimes it's best to not be married,” says a source close to Paltrow. “They know that about each other now.”
Rumors of trouble have followed the couple for awhile, although the source said Paltrow doesn’t believe the cheating rumors. “She doesn't care what people think. She really doesn’t, she knows the truth,” the source said.
Paltrow told Self magazine last year that she was facing challenges in her marriage.
“You're not learning anything unless you're having the difficult conversations,” she said. “Dealing with things directly changed my relationships. Sometimes when you get clear about who you are, others get less comfortable because they liked who you were. It's changed my marriage, too, but he's up for the challenge.”

In other troubled couple news: Robin Thicke opened up to People.com about his efforts to get wife Paula Patton back with an emotional tribute at one of his concerts.
“My music is very honest about what I'm going through and my songs are about my life,” the Blurred Lines singer, 37, told People at the grand opening party of Express Times Square in New York City. “And my relationship with her was 21 years of my life, so I just thought it was important to me to let people know how much she means to me.”
Patton, 38, has yet to publicly acknowledge his messages, People reports, but Thicke says, “she loved it.”
