The jury in the trial of a man accused of driving drunk and killing a Miami Heat dancer in Fort Lauderdale in 2010 finished its first day of deliberations Tuesday with no verdict. But after discussing the case for five hours, jurors sent Broward Circuit Judge Ilona Holmes a question that offered encouragement to the defense table.
Mario Careaga, 46, is on trial for two counts of DUI manslaughter and one count of careless driving in the accident that killed Nancy Lopez-Ruiz, 22, on Sept. 10, 2010. Although only one person died, prosecutors are allowed to charge the defendant with two manslaughter counts that can be proven in different ways.
