Two letters to the editor have been published in reference to FIU’s efforts to find an alternate location for the Miami-Dade Youth Fair so that the university can grow onto the fairgrounds. Both of these pieces equated the value of the fair with the potential inherent in FIU’s growth.
As an FIU student who grew up going to the fair, I enjoy it as much as anyone else. However, there has to be a way to keep the fair operating elsewhere while making the land adjacent to our Modesto A. Maidique Campus available for expansion. FIU has the smallest main campus of any university in Florida.
The need for additional land to expand is critical to the growth of the institution.
FIU’s future growth means greater opportunity for people like me. College graduates make $1 million more over their lifetime than non-graduates. In this case, lack of room to grow will also mean missed opportunities in the areas of entrepreneurship and research.
Let’s put rhetoric aside and do what is best for our community.
