Miami Fire Rescue is looking into whether a blaze in a scooter repair shop Monday night is tied to an arson fire a year ago in the same location.

According to Miami Fire Rescue Lt. Ignatius Carroll, heavy flames engulfed the canopy workshop at about 8:30 p.m. Monday at Astro Choppers and Scooter Repair Shop, 633 NE 79th St.

When crews arrived, there was a man trapped inside. The man had tried to put out the fire by climbing a fence and using a hose.

Using bolt cutters, firefighters got the man out and extinguished the fire, according to Carroll.

Carroll said the canopy was completely destroyed, as was some equipment inside. The nearby Magic Car Care Center was also damaged.

A year ago, shop surveillance cameras captured video of someone setting the business on fire. It was not clear whether anyone was ever charged with the fire.

Carroll said cameras were not positioned to capture Monday’s fire, but investigators will review previous tapes to see if there are any similarities.
