The world has just witnessed a premeditated and carefully executed invasion of Crimea by Russia. This mimics the invasion and subsequent ethnic cleansing and genocide of Georgians in South Ossetia in August 2008. The world must unite in condemnation of Russia’s deplorable actions. Russia has abdicated any claim to consort in the community of nations and must be diplomatically ostracized.
In light of this outrageous behavior, we must adhere to principle. Unfortunately, in 2008 we failed to act appropriately.
The callous invasion of Crimea reminds us that if we fail to do the right thing and fail to remain militarily strong and stand up for morality and probity, we will again be subjected to the whims of a greedy regime devoid of morality. The next states to be victimized will probably be the former republics of the Soviet Union.
As George Santayana famously wrote, “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.”
