Miami Hurricanes make the Women’s NIT

It turns out there is a South Florida college basketball team in the postseason, after all. The University of Miami women’s team found out Monday night that it received an automatic bid to the 64-team Women’s National Invitational Tournament.

UM will play host to Stetson in the first round Thursday at a time to be determined.

As the highest-rated Atlantic Coast Conference team not to make the NCAA Tournament, the Hurricanes received the conference’s automatic bid to the WNIT. Miami finished in eighth place with a 16-14 record and an 8-8 league record.

“I think it’s just a phenomenal statement to the quality of our program, to the support that we have from our administration and on campus that we are in our fifth straight postseason,’’ said UM coach Katie Meier. “Especially with this team that a lot of people doubted, and didn’t expect to even have a .500 record, to have a winning season, be .500 in the ACC and to get the automatic bid — that’s something we’re very excited about and we hope to make a deep run.’’
