Bells and whistles to jazz up an existing kitchen sink

Q: We’re doing some remodeling in our kitchen that will include a new kitchen faucet. Since my kitchen sink is an under-mount style we will not be changing out the sink. But, I would like some new features to be added to my present sink, along with the new kitchen faucet. Can you please give me a few other ideas on how I can “jazz up” my old kitchen sink?

Patty, Tennessee

A: If you choose the right style faucet, you should be able to utilize extra sink holes on your kitchen sink that may allow you to add some new accessories. If one extra sink hole is available, the easiest add-on can be a built-in soap dispenser to reduce soap bottle clutter on your kitchen counters.

If another sink hole is available, a piping hot water dispenser can serve you up nearly instant hot water for things like coffee, tea and oatmeal. While a hot water dispenser requires a water line, you can usually tap in to the water system right under the kitchen sink.

Speaking of plumbing under the sink, another great option is to install a “remote cable-controlled” sink drain strainer. This way you can avoid reaching into dirty water and under pots and pans to drain out your kitchen sink. A push of the deck mounted cable button automatically opens the sink drain.

Final note: Any of these options may be an affordable upgrade to “jazz up” your existing kitchen sink, and I’m sure that’s music to your ears.

The honeybees in the house had to be evicted — humanely

We’ve been hearing a lot about honeybees dying en masse, about Colony Collapse Disorder, even predictions that the honeybee is headed for extinction. There is no doubt that beekeepers as well as farmers who require bees to pollinate their crops are losing lots of bees — entire hives in fact. Some beekeepers have reported that 30 to 90 percent of their bees have died.
