Cooper City softball advances to South Florida Slam-Fest semifinal

Special to the Miami Herald

The Cooper City softball team turned in a perfect day's work on Friday to advance to the semifinal round of the 20th annual South Florida Slam-Fest Tournament.

The Cowboys ran through Key West and St. Cloud to win Pool D. They'll face top ranked Gulliver -- who swept Pool A -- in the Blue Bracket Final Four on Saturday.

Key West took a 1-0 advantage in the first inning with two clean hits but Cooper City answered back when Megan Isoba took the leadoff walk and was driven home by a sacrifice fly by Paige Grunfelder. Shannon Legacki tried to score on the same play but was tagged out to end the inning.

Cooper City then took the lead in the second inning when Lindy Olivares scored from third base on a wild pitch. Isoba's RBI double capped the big inning and they never looked back.

The game would later end in a mercy rule after a four-run fourth inning by Cooper City followed by their 12th run in the fifth off another wild pitch.

Sabrina Hedbing gets the win after a complete game. She struck out three batters and gave up two runs in five innings.

The game was not without controversy. In the forth inning, catcher Beth Williams hit a triple but was taken out for a pinch runner. She voiced her desire to score in the next at-bat but it wasn't meant to be.

In the second game against St. Cloud, it took two innings for Cooper City to establish control of the game. The Cowboys scored two runs in the second inning and it took St. Cloud four innings to get their first hit.

Carol Lokeinsky dominated the Bulldogs throughout the game, striking out 8 batters in seven strong shutout innings.

Gulliver is the host of the tournament and is the top ranked team in the state. A matchup with Cooper City will be an interesting barometer for the season.
