Douglas advances in boys’ volleyball

The Douglas boys’ volleyball team is on its way to defend yet another district championship after defeating McArthur 25-22, 25-17, 21-25, 25-12 on Wednesday afternoon.

Junior Tyler Smith had 23 kills, 22 digs, 16 points and three aces. After four games, Smith has registered over 100 kills.

Douglas will host Pompano Beach at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.

“He works very, very hard, and in my opinion he is the best player in the county,” Eagles coach Andy Valor said.

Sophomore Matt Castilhas had 64 assists and has proven to be a key offensive player.

“[Castilhas] rode the bench most of last year, having no experience, and now he stands to be one of our best players as only a sophomore,” Valor said.

Senior Gabe De Silva had 25 digs, 12 points and two aces.

“Our players were tough [Wednesday night], and McArthur is a very scary team. I’d be worried to play them later on in the season when they’ve had more practice in them,” Valor said.

The Eagles ended last season with a loss against Southwest in the state quarterfinals. They have won the district championship six years in a row.

With six out of seven starters having graduated, they started the season fresh. Now the Eagles are back for a possible seventh district championship, second regional title and a chance at the state championship.
