Costa Cruises will double its presence in Miami at the end of the year, sailing two ships in the Caribbean.
North American executives with the cruise line, part of Doral-based Carnival Corp., announced Tuesday at Cruise Shipping Miami that it will sail a second ship from PortMiami between December of 2014 and the following March.
Costa Luminosa, a 2,260-passenger ship that is wrapping up its current winter season in Miami, will return in December to sail 10-day voyages. It will be joined by the 2,114-passenger Costa Mediterranea, with seven-day sailings.
The cruise operator with headquarters in Italy last stationed two ships in North America simultaneously in 2009. Scott Knutson, vice president of sales and marketing for Costa Cruises North America, said the demand was strong enough to bring more capacity over.
Weve had nice momentum here in the North American market, he said. I think thats been recognized.
