Democratic senators to wrap up all-nighter on climate change

McClatchy Washington Bureau

Senate Democrats plan to wrap up their climate change all-night later Tuesday morning, and that will probably be the end of any lengthy action on the issue.

No major votes on the issue are expected--after all, it's probably impossible in this Senate to get the 60 needed to act.

Instead, the Senate's 53 Democrats and two independents are hoping to call attention to the issue. About 30 have been talking at various times through the night.

"It's time for Congress to wake up and get serious about addressing this issue," said Sen.  Sheldon Whitehouse of Rhode Island, a top official in the Climate Action Task Force.

All-nighters are usually reserved for filibusters, where a group of senators, or sometimes just one, tries to block legislation.

This time, senators were for the change. But the issue has proven politically volatile, and has drawn little support among Republicans.
