What is Putin’s reasoning?

How ironic that a Russian leader is copying that all-time Russian favorite Adolf Hitler. Hitler justified the annexation of Czechoslavakia because he had to protect Germans in the Sudetenland who were being abused by Czechs. In that case, the West could have done something, but in this case the only results are going to be slaps on the wrist and a bad public image for Vladamir Putin.

Is Putin doing this for the Crimea and the naval bases, or is he doing it for the Western tilt of the Ukraine? Would he still have done this if Nikita Khrushchev had not merged Crimea into the Ukraine some 60 years ago because the Crimea was not part of Ukraine until then?

Only time will tell.
