The March 5 article Disabled drivers to pay for parking, reported that Jackson Health System has won a waiver to county law that will allow it to charge parking fees to drivers with disabled permits, but who don’t have special equipment on their cars.
I have such a permit and I use it carefully. Over the past 27 years, I have spent at least five years in a wheelchair, packed in the back of my van, four years in a scooter with a lift on my car, crutches and finally, just a cane.
I am appalled that Jackson Health System is planning to charge a fee to park in a handicapped parking spot, which I have earned with much pain and suffering. It is an insult to those of us who have worked so hard to recover from debilitating injuries.
