Coral Reef girls blank Sunset in softball

TEAMS OF THE WEEK

The Miami High girls’ basketball team won its second state championship and first since 2005 with a couple of dominant victories over Sanford Seminole and Port St. Lucie Treasure Coast. Junior center Beatrice Mompremier earned tournament MVP honors after pouring in a combined 29 points and 30 rebounds.

The Miami Country Day girls’ basketball team brought home the first state championship in school history in any sport with victories over Maclay and Seffner Christian in the Class 3A final four. Maria Alvarez hit four three-pointers and finished with 15 points in the final. Danielle Minott had 19 points and 15 rebounds in the semifinal.

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

Marquise Clark, South Miami, boys’ basketball: Clark had 32 points to lead the Cobras to a 70-60 win over Hollywood McArthur in the Region 4-8A final.

Dewan Huell, Norland, boys’ basketball: Huell had 15 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Vikings to a 55-43 win over Pembroke Pines Charter in the Region 4-6A final.

Kayla Roberts, Norland, girls’ basketball: Roberts finished with a game-high 19 points, but the Vikings fell 39-34 to Pensacola Pine Forest in the Class 6A state semifinals.

Chloe Nixon, Gulliver, girls’ basketball: Nixon had 10 points and five rebounds in the Raiders’ Class 4A state semifinal loss to Jacksonville Ribault.

Alex Valverde, Florida Christian, baseball: Valverde pitched a no-hitter against Mater Lakes in a 3-0 win for the Patriots.

Artie Paula, South Dade, baseball: Paula went 4 for 4 to lead the Bucs to a 9-8 win against Columbus.

Karina De La Rosa, Krop, softball: De La Rosa threw a one-hitter to lead the Lightning to an 11-0 win against South Miami.

Dovanta Jones, Central, boys’ track and field: Jones swept the shot put and discus titles at the Louie Bing Invitational.

Lloydricia Cameron and Timetria Mitchell, Northwestern, girls’ track and field: Cameron won the shot put and discus and Mitchell won the 100 hurdles to lead Northwestern to the championship of the Louie Bing Invitational.

John Michael Holtmann, Ransom Everglades, boys’ tennis: Holtmann won his singles match 8-5 to lead the Raiders to a 7-0 win against Delray American Heritage.

Paulina Bejar, Coral Gables, girls’ tennis: Bejar won her singles match 8-1 to lead the Cavaliers to a win against Miami High.

Mack Shoer, Ransom Everglades, boys’ lacrosse: Shoer had a combined 11 goals to lead the Raiders to wins over Calvary Christian and Gulliver.

Ryan Dawson, Columbus, boys’ water polo: Dawson had six goals to lead the Explorers to a 16-10 win against Southwest.

The Coral Reef girls’ softball team shut out Sunset 16-0 on Monday afternoon.

The Barracudas had seven runs in the first inning, one in the second and closed the third with eight runs. They registered 14 hits and no errors. The game was called after three innings.

Samantha Lorenzo went 3 for 3 with two RBI and two runs. Tyanni Guzman went 2 for 3 and had two runs. Alex Garcia also went 2 for 3 with an RBI and two runs scored. Carolina Colli went 1 of 1 with two RBI. The winning pitcher was Michelle Ryan (1-0).

The Barracudas (6-0) will next host Varela at 3:30 p.m Thursday.
