Re the Feb. 5 story Conservative legislators say they support limited expansion of gambling: The five resort casinos in Miami should have been Hialeah Park, the Americana Hotel, the Fontainebleau, a Genting resort and, possibly, another resort in downtown.
But where the Florida Legislature seems to think that bigger is better, I think the opposite is more appropriate for Miami — five medium resorts instead of one giant resort.
This would spread out gambling and limit the scale of the resorts so they could not overpower everything around them and could lead to a happy mix of tourist venues in Miami. I also think the resorts should be restricted from offering discounted rooms or meals so as not to unfairly compete with the Biltmore Hotel or the many hotels in South Beach.
