McArthur boys’ hoops tip Miami Beach in OT

Special to the Miami Herald

Derric Jean, McArthur’s fearless 6-2 guard, dunked on Miami Beach’s 7-1, 255-pound freshman center Zach Brown early in the third quarter.

That set the tone for McArthur, which overcame 35 points by Miami Beach freshman guard Kenneth Rolle and delivered a 69-67 overtime win for its home fans in a Class 8A regional semifinal.

McArthur, which opened in 1957, advanced to the regional finals for the first time in school history. The Mustangs (20-6), who were led by Jean’s 16 points, will play host to South Miami on Saturday night.

Miami Beach finished its best season since 1969 at 23-6.

Brown had just one point — and two fouls — at halftime. He finished with nine points, including a put-back at the regulation buzzer that sent the game into overtime.

It was McArthur’s second straight overtime win, and a key was their decision to challenge Brown.

“When I watched film, so many teams went away from him,” McArthur coach Warren Gale said. “Our kids are big enough, strong enough and athletic enough to go right at him.”
