Man walks into oncoming traffic in Oakland Park, killed by car

A man was killed by a car when he walked into oncoming traffic in Oakland Park, the Broward Sheriff's Office said Monday.

John Hanson, 56, was fatally struck about 7:30 Sunday night in the 5300 block of North Dixie Highway, just north of Commercial Boulevard.

According to BSO, Hanson was in the northbound lanes of the road, and not in a crosswalk, when he was struck by a car driven by Jessica Newton, 23, of Pompano Beach. Newton stopped after the accident. No charges were filed.

Police asked anyone with information about the accident to call Crime Stoppers at 954-493-8477.
