Re the Feb. 10 article, FHP: Speeders flood express lanes: Why not use the tolling system itself to catch and fine the speeders?
Doubling FHP troopers on I-95 to monitor speeding in the express lanes isn’t cost effective because there isn’t enough room to safely pull speeders over. However, the system already knows what time each vehicle enters and exits the lanes. It knows this to calculate the average speed of all vehicles to adjust the toll. If a vehicle transits the full length of the lane above, say, 65 miles per hour, a ticket could be issued just like is done for toll-by-plate or the red-light cameras.
