House Democrats will try new tactic to get minimum wage up

McClatchy Washington Bureau

House Democrats will try a rarely-used tactic later this month to force the House to consider minimum wage legislation.

Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi said at a party retreat in Cambridge, Maryland, Thursday that when Congress returns Feb. 24, Democrats will urge House members to sign a "discharge petition."

Such a move, which is rarely successful, would need 217 signatures, or a majority of the current House. Democrats have 200 members. If all signed, 17 Republicans would be needed.

The issue would then be voted on in the House.

Getting those Republican signatures is going to be difficult, since most are opposed to the plan.

President Barack Obama, who is scheduled to appear at the retreat Friday, wants to raise the wage from $7.25 to $10.10.

Obama Wednesday signed an executive order raising the minimum wage for employees of federal contractors starting on Jan. 1.
