As improbable as it might seem, four-time defending Class 5A state champions Dillard and Hall of Fame coach Marcia Pinder will be in the unfamiliar role as decided underdogs when they travel to No. 1 Coconut Creek in the Class 5A regional semifinals on Tuesday.

All eyes will be on Dillard-Coconut Creek III when Pinder and the Dillard brain trust, led by top assistant George Adams, will try to keep the Panthers’ drive for five alive against a Cougars’ team (23-3) intent on taking the Panthers’ state championship crown.

Dillard’s state title hopes took a hit when Broward Player of the Year candidate Briana Green went down with a season-ending injury before the district playoffs.

Still, Pinder refused to use Green’s absence as an excuse for the Panthers (20-7) dropping two games in the season series with a 69-40 loss in the District 16-5A championship game on Feb. 1.

“The girls are just playing,” Pinder said. “I don’t think they really had time to sit down and think that, ‘OK, Briana is gone, she is not going to be with us.’ There is no letdown, no sobbing, none of that.”

Pinder said the Panthers can ill afford a repeat of the District championship, when poor ball security and rushed shots led to a 41-22 halftime deficit from which they never recovered.

If the young Panthers, led by Jamesha Paul, can minimize the Cougars’ vaunted fast break with better ball-handling decisions, Pinder likes her team’s chances.

“Now we have to go back and prepare for the next one,” Pinder said. “Being patient. We rushed things in the district final. We were erratic.”
