Resident at Hialeah living facility steals unattended van, gets arrested

An intellectually disabled man was arrested Monday, accused of stealing a transport van parked in front of his Hialeah Assisted Living Facility and crashing into another before surrendering.

Police say at about 3 Monday afternoon, Craig F. Werner, 61, stole a National Health Transport van parked in front of the All American ALF at 808 W. First Ave. in Hialeah.

The van’s engine was left running while the van’s operator walked away to help another patient.

Werner, police say, slipped in and drove away. The van hit a car as it neared the intersection of Palm Avenue and Ninth Street. No one was injured.

Werner took off, but was finally stopped by Hialeah police in the area of East Eighth Avenue and Ninth Street. Werner was able to go about half a mile.

Werner was charged with auto theft, hit-and-run and battery with a vehicle.

Police are looking into why the van was left unattended.
