Re the Jan. 29 story Film incentives wane; industry frets: As one of many background actors employed in South Florida’s film industry, I cannot understand why our Republican-led Legislature — supposedly pro-business — has adopted a death wish for an industry that, in 2013, accounted for $3.7 billion in wages and production expenses in the state.
The uphill battle to extend tax credit funding to Florida’s Entertainment Industry Incentive Program (a $296 million fund of production incentives) through 2020, does not bode well for the industry’s future in Florida or for all of those associated businesses that make a living from this sector.
Why lawmakers think that the TV and movie industry is not important is beyond reason. They need to rethink their strategy. So much for job-creation political rhetoric.
