Niners' Bowman undergoes ACL surgery

The Sports Network

Pensacola, FL ( - San Francisco 49ers All-Pro linebacker NaVorro Bowman had surgery Tuesday to repair a torn ACL in his left knee, an injury that places his availability for the start of next season in question.

Noted sports surgeon Dr. James Andrews performed the procedure in Pensacola, Fla., with Bowman posting a picture of himself on his Instagram account with the caption, "Time for surgery" prior to the operation.

Bowman tore his ACL during the fourth quarter of San Francisco's 23-17 loss to eventual world champion Seattle in the NFC Championship Game on Jan. 19. He had to wait more than two weeks to have the ligament repaired due to swelling caused by damage to the medial collateral ligament as well.

Typical recovery time for the surgery is between 6-to-9 months, making Bowman a possibility but not a certainty to be ready for when the 2014 regular season begins.

Bowman, who has yet to miss a game in his four-year NFL career, earned Pro Bowl honors for a second straight season in 2013 after compiling 145 tackles, five sacks, two interceptions and four forced fumbles. The 25-year-old has recorded 143 tackles or more in each of the last three seasons.
