ROUNDUP

Cardinal Gibbons dominates in district wrestling

Special to the Miami Herald

It was a pin fest at Cardinal Gibbons on Saturday afternoon as the Chiefs rolled to the District 14-1A wrestling championship by more than doubling the score of the next team.

Gibbons advanced all 14 wrestlers to the finals, and 12 captured individual district championships. All 14 wrestlers will advance to next weekend’s regional finals.

The Chiefs, who last won a state championship in 2011, are in a great position to bring home another title if they can get 10 wrestlers to Lakeland, according to coach Frank Pettineo.

“It went exactly how I calculated, so we’re going to go into the regionals with 12 champions,” Pettineo said. “Across the board, most of our kids are really good. That’s what hard training does. Our preparation is for Lakeland. This year, I think the boys stepped up because they’ve been coming up a little short, but I think they are ready to go.”

The Chiefs were led by three-time state champion Jamal Morris, who finished his district-title match with a pin in 1:10 in the 138-pound weight class. His twin brother, Jamel, who is undefeated this year at 33-0, finished his match with a pin at 3:49 in the 132-pound weight class.

Anthony Vazquez remained undefeated this season for Gibbons with a pin at 3:44 in the 126-pound weight class. He is 30-0 this season. So did Kennedy Monday, who won his district title with a pin at 1:58 and improved to 33-0.

Two non-Gibbons wrestlers captured district titles. One was American Heritage’s Brady Mosar, who won at 120 with a pin at 1:30 over Gibbons’ Sonny Picasio. Mosar is 40-2 this season. Coral Springs Charter’s Kenneth Rosa won the district crown at 220 by pinning Gibbons’ Austin Nelson in 37 seconds.

Team Results: 1. Cardinal Gibbons 257.5; 2. American Heritage 125; 3. Coral Springs Charter 97; 4. Calvary Chapel 82; 5. St. Andrews 55.
