As Michael Doyle suggests in his Jan. 30 article, Farm bill passes House, and California growers are happy, this bill has an effect on millions, not just in America, but worldwide. Our policymakers have an opportunity to make life-saving reforms to the program that provides international food aid. We could reach as many as 4 million more hungry people with small changes originally included in the Senate version of the Farm Bill.
Congress can ensure that our aid dollars are spent more efficiently to reach more people faster, helping families feed themselves and lift their communities out of poverty reducing the need for future emergency assistance. As an advocate for the poverty-fighting organization CARE, I urge our legislators to support these food-aid reforms. It is not only a crucial step in the right direction, but a great opportunity to save millions of lives and provide a tangible expression of our compassion and generosity across the world.
Food aid may be our greatest symbol of American leadership as a force for good.
