As a missionary who has worked with Haitian immigrants in the Dominican Republic, I’m encouraged by the report by that country’s ambassador to the United States, Anibal de Castro, which documents immigrants in the Dominican Republic. The sincerity of the Dominican proposal will be closely monitored. The critics of the Dominican immigration policy should help Haitians born in Haiti secure their documents and express willingness to help the Dominican government document the thousands of Dominican-born Haitians. This massive endeavor will require the cooperation of Haitian authorities, NGOs, churches and people of good will.
Let’s join efforts such as the one put forth by the Christian Reformed Church in the Dominican Republic, which spends time and money getting its Haitian membership properly documented.
