St. Brendan, Florida Christian, Dade Christian win in FHSAA Region 4 cheerleading championships

Special to the Miami Herald

Bumping bass shook the walls of Fort Lauderdale Dillard’s gymnasium Saturday at the FHSAA Region 4 cheerleading championships. St. Brendan placed first in the extra large varsity division, Florida Christian won the large varsity division and Dade Christian won the small varsity division.

“Everything we do is for our county and for our school,” said Nikol Rodriguez, senior Dade Christian captain. “Being that one school that everybody looks at as part of Dade is an amazing opportunity.”

Despite the typical tossing, twisting, and tumbling, each team came out of the event unscathed. Seminole Ridge won the large nontumbling division. Coral Springs Christian captured the medium varsity division. South Plantation won the small coed division and Coral Glades won the small nontumbling division.

“It was amazing,” said Dianne Sanzari, athletic director of Coral Springs and event coordinator. “It’s very organized, running on time, there is lots of performing. Everybody is healthy. There haven’t been injuries, which is always a good thing. Because they put it out there that cheerleading is so dangerous.”

Out of nearly 60 teams, just five came from Miami-Dade County.

“That’s the best performance we have had all year,” Rodriguez said. “We are hoping to take it all at state next weekend. We just came in with confidence and no nerves and knew what was going to be done and had to do what we had to do.”
