Re Elliot Abrams’ Jan. 8 Other Views article, Drug traffickers threaten Central American nations: If Abrams were really concerned about the ties between Salvadoran government officials and drug traffickers, he might have pointed to the DEA investigation of Wilber Rivera Monge or of Roberto Carlos Silva, both from the right-wing PCN party, or the IRS investigation of former officials from the right-wing ARENA party for money laundering. Instead, he is grinding an old ideological ax against leftist parties in Latin America.
As for his claims that democracy is in jeopardy in El Salvador, nothing could be further from the truth. Last month, more than 50 members of Congress wrote to Secretary of State John Kerry noting the important advances in voter enfranchisement and increased democratic participation that have been implemented under the Funes-FMLN administration.
Abrams’ oped is part of an international political smear campaign against the FMLN, which is poised to win the country’s Feb. 2 presidential election.
