Sunset boys’ soccer wins District 16-5A title over Varela in double OT

The Sunset boys’ soccer team won the District 16-5A championship on Friday afternoon.

Sunset defeated Varela 3-2 in double overtime.

In the first half, the Knights were led by Danny Ponce, who scored 23 yards out from the left side.

Varela’s Daniel Foen then answered with a goal six minutes before the half to tie the score.

Fernando Hernandez assisted Eddy Pineiro with the second goal in the second half, giving the Knights the lead.

Dominick Dudley then responded by scoring a goal for the Vipers 20 minutes into the second half.

Varela outplayed Sunset in the second half and into the first overtime.

“In the first overtime, Sunset was able to take advantage of a quick restart,” Varela coach Mathew Flipse said.

Finally, three minutes into the second overtime, Jonathan Diaz put a 25-yard shot into the upper-right corner of the goal for Sunset.

“It was a world-class goal that you can only see on televison,” Flipse said.

Sunset improved to 13-3-5 and takes on Coral Gables on Thursday.
