Car crash kills driver; Hialeah police officer seriously injured

A car crash early Friday in Hialeah killed a driver and seriously injured a police officer.

Robert Morales, a four-year veteran of the Hialeah Police Department, was on duty when he collided with Amado Arcia Lapido, 36, at the intersection of West Eighth Avenue and 49th Street at about 5 a.m. Both had serious injuries and were taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital by helicopter. Lapido died at the hospital while Morales underwent surgery. He was listed in serious condition Friday evening.

Police said an eyewitness driver provided a sworn statement saying that the officer had the green light as he entered the intersection.

The investigation remains open.
