Artist Michele Oka Doner’s new sculpture at Codina Partners’ Downtown Doral development was given the name “Micco” during a dedication ceremony on Thursday.

Oka Doner said she sees Doral as the gateway to the Everglades, and chose a Seminole name that denotes a wise person who was in charge.

“It will give it personality, having a name. It endows it with a sense of personhood,” she said. “It was a transcendent and wonderful notion that every village had its Micco. Now this new town of Doral has their Micco.”
