MAST Academy advances to soccer district final

The MAST Academy girls’ soccer team cruised to a 7-1 victory over Pace in the District 15-2A semifinals Wednesday afternoon.

Sophomore Mariana Speckmaier dominated the field with five goals and an assist for MAST (15-2-4).

“I have never seen such a great player, she went really hard on today’s game,” MAST coach Osie Morales said.

Speckmaier has recorded 55 goals so far this season.

Senior midfielder Joanna Gomez chipped in two goals for the Makos.

“Gomez has been a great player for the past four years, so it means a lot to her to win this year,” Morales said.

Pace defeated Mater Lakes in double overtime in the quarterfinals on Tuesday.

“We had defeated them before but what I saw today was a much improved team,” Morales said.

The Makos are ranked No. 1 in their district and next travel to Ransom for the district final at 7 p.m. Friday.
