I appreciate Genting’s concern that Miami is on the edge of economic disaster and that it is riding in to save us. But, if it hasn’t noticed, we are already one of the hottest destinations on the planet. We have sun, beaches, art, music, theater, nature, museums, gardens, restaurants, clubs, business, finance, trade, diverse ethnicities, friendly people and a charisma that money, including Genting’s, cannot buy.
Now that it owns the former Miami Herald building, maybe Genting can use it as the eastern end of a plaza by building two arms to the west with shops, restaurants and cafes on three sides, and offices and residential above. This could create Miami’s answer to the Plaza Mayor in Madrid or St. Mark’s Square in Venice. If Genting really wants to add to Miami’s attractiveness, it should give us something we need, not something that its bottom line desires.
