Nude or lewd? Key West looks over laws for Fantasy Fest

Miami Herald Staff Report

Key West is taking another look at the city’s nudity laws in light of the painted body parts that pop up during Fantasy Fest in October.

Commissioners have directed the city attorney to refine the local laws and the areas in which they are enforced, according to a report by KeysInfoNet.

The existing law carves out a "fantasy zone" that runs the length of Duval Street and cross streets between Whitehead and Simonton Streets. In that area, women can't expose their breasts, although breasts covered with body paint are allowed. Body paint must be applied in an enclosed area out of public view.

"I think the intent is during Fantasy Fest but it has gone beyond that," Key West Commissioner Jimmy Weekley said. "It's getting into family events like Goombay," a Bahamian festival held the weekend ahead of Fantasy Fest.

Some residents say revelers at the weeklong party have exposed a little too much in restaurants and supermarkets, The Associated Press reported. According to one complaint, a man clad only in body paint took a seat at the counter in a Denny's, angering some diners.
